Chicago, Ill. – In the consolation game of the North Central Holiday Inn Tip-off Tournament, the Oberlin college men's basketball team fell to Lakeland College (Wisconsin) 77-63.
Sophomore
Marcus Johnson scored a career-high 21 points – 16 of which came in the second half as he finished 8-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from 3-point land. Freshman
Andrew Fox continues to impress as he added 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Fellow rookie
Johnathan Nelson contributed 11 points in the loss.
"With the adversity we are going through with a lot of guys hurt, this team really grew up in the second half and showed their true potential," Head Coach
Isaiah Cavaco said. "I felt they really settled down in the second half and did a lot of good things."
The Yeomen, who outscored the Muskies 41-32 in the second half, were plagued by a sluggish first half. Oberlin (1-2) trailed by just seven, 25-18, with 9:28 left to play in the opening frame, but the Muskies used a 9-0 spurt over the next two minutes to extend their lead to 34-18 en route to claiming a 45-22 advantage at the break.
Trailing 67-44 with 7:42 left to play, the Yeomen tried to claw their way back into the contest as they used a 9-0 run of their own to get within 13 with 4:29 left to play. Unfortunately, they would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.
The Yeomen cashed in 42-percent (22-of-52) of their shots, while the Muskies finished with a 51-percent success rate by knocking down 28-of-55 attempts. Lakeland also won the rebounding war 39-25.
Oberlin, which was without the services of
Ryan Magiera,
Josh Merritt,
Dahsan Gary and
Joe Dilworth and
Hal Sundt, will look to bounce back on Tuesday night when it travels to Waynesburg College. The opening tip is set for 7 p.m.
