Women’s Soccer Gets Heartbroken at Home

Oberlin, Ohio – Kendra Simmons' header with 32 seconds left to play lifted the visited Case Western Reserve University Spartans to a 1-0 victory over the Oberlin College women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon at Fred Shults Field.

“This was a tough one for us to swallow today,” Head Coach Kristen Hayden said. “We played so well throughout the game and fought all the way to the end and to lose in the last few seconds really hurts.”

After a controversial no-foul call at midfield, which would have gave the Yeowomen possession with 42 seconds left to play, the Spartans instead pushed the ball downfield to earn a corner kick with 32 seconds left in the match. Deena Levey took the corner and sent a perfect service into the box, which was headed in by Simmons for the game's lone goal.

Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the match with Case (8-5-2) triggering 21 shots, nine of which were on goal. Oberlin (4-11-2) squeezed off 10 shots with three on goal. The Spartans also had a slight 4-3 edge on corner kicks.

Seeing her first action in nearly a month, senior Christie Zelnik had a phenomenal game in goal, making eight saves on the afternoon. The Ann Arbor, Michigan, native also turned away a penalty kick by Amy Baumann in the 67th minute.

A tightly called match, the Spartans were whistled for 13 fouls, while Oberlin got hit for nine of its own.

Lois Immerman, Lori Sako and Veronica Fusco led the Yeowomen with two shots each.

The Yeowomen will closeout the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday night when Ohio Wesleyan comes to town for a 7 p.m. tilt.
