Joanna Johnson was named as the Great Lakes Region Runner of the Year, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches announced on Wednesday.
“This award is a true testament to the type of athlete Joanna is,” head coach
Ray Appenheimer said. “She is a special runner with tremendous ability and she will only get better as her career moves forward.”
Johnson is unbeaten in Oberlin’s seven meets this season with an average margin of victory of over 22 seconds. This past Saturday she secured her second-straight trip to nationals by winning the Great Lakes Regional Meet in 21:51.76. Early this month she also won her second NCAC crown with a mark of 21:02 on Oberlin’s own terrain.
At last year’s NCAA Championship Meet, Johnson finished 89th overall with a time of 22:54.
The 2008 NCAA Championship Meet is being held on the campus of Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana. The men’s race will get underway way 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 22, while the women’s 6K run will follow at noon.
