November 1 – Oberlin sophomore
Joanna Johnson broke from the pack early on Saturday en route to her second straight North Coast Athletic Conference cross country title.
The Chico, California native ran a blistering 21:02 to claim the crown ahead of Denison sophomore Katie Navarre. Oberlin senior
Nicky Ouellet ran a tough race to finish third overall. The Yeowomen also finished third in the team totals with 87 points behind champion Kenyon (65) and Ohio Wesleyan (81).
“Joanna and Nicky really ran superb races,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Ray Appenheimer said. “It's tough to defend a title, but Joanna maintained her poise in the face of some good competition. Nicky broke from a pack of runners with about 1200 meters to go to grab third, and that's exactly how you want to see a senior captain go out on her home course.”
Senior
Ryan King paced the Yeomen with an 11th place finish overall. Sophomore
Justin Warner recorded the first top-20 conference finish of his career, crossing the line in 17th place. The Yeomen finished a close fifth with 108 points. Wabash (93) and Kenyon (102) were just ahead in third and fourth place. Allegheny won the team title with 34 points.
“Our men executed very well,” Appenheimer said. “They ran as a pack, just as we had asked them to do. Ryan had an outstanding race – the best race of his collegiate cross country career. I'm proud of the way we competed today.”
Johnson was also named NCAC Runner of the Year, while both Johnson and Ouellet earned All-NCAC first team honors as well. King was named the All-NCAC second team, and Warner earned a spot on the third team.
Oberlin is off next weekend. Both team return to action at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on November 15 at Otterbein College.
