Blake New, who enters his 12th season as the head coach of the Oberlin College men’s soccer team, has made the Yeomen consistent contenders in the North Coast Athletic Conference.
In the last four seasons, New guided the Yeomen to 34 wins and an appearance in the 2006 NCAC Tournament, while also being continually ranked in the region. In 2009, New once again helped guide five Yeomen to all conference accolades, including returning goaltender Zach Lipshultz, defender Wyatt Hayman and midfielder Oliver Miller-Farrell.
During the 2005 season, Oberlin had one of the best conference seasons in school history, finishing second in the NCAC with a league record of 6-2-1. For his efforts New was named NCAC Coach of Year. The Yeomen also were ranked in the region throughout the season and had three First-Team All-NCAC selections and one second-team member.
The Yeomen followed their successful 2005 season with another strong run in 2006, placing third in the conference with a record of 8-5-5 overall and 5-2-2 in the league. At year’s end the Yeomen also had three players garner First-Team All-Conference honors.
New’s coaching tenure began in 1996 as head coach of the women’s soccer team, shifting to the men’s program in 1999.
“We have been close to achieving our goals the last three seasons, but have not lived up to our full potential,” New says. “Our team has been working hard in the off-season to reach the level of success we aspire to achieve.”
As a student-athlete at Cleveland State University, New earned Mid-Continent Conference honors as a goalkeeper in 1988 and served as the Vikings’ team captain in 1989. Cleveland State recorded a 46-28-8 record during New’s playing days, culminating in MCC titles in 1986 and 1988. He still holds the CSU record for career shutouts (29) and ranks in the top ten for career saves (267).
Following his college career, New was drafted by the Cleveland Crunch of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the Canton Invaders of the National Professional Soccer League. He also spent two years as a player-coach for the Cleveland Caps of the USISL.
New earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1991. He returned to Cleveland State in 1992 for a master’s degree in education with a concentration in sports management while serving as an assistant coach for the Vikings. New led his team to a state championship and perfect 25-0 record in 1985. In the spring of 2009 he was inducted into the North Olmsted High School Athletics Hall of Fame.
New resides in Oberlin with his wife, Jessa, and their daughters, Madalyn and Maia.
